Paint a surface
Apply color to the surface with a direct brush stroke. Geometry stays fixed; Codex’s settings action does not paint the stroke for you.
Before you start
Select a paintable mesh in the Material workspace and exit Face Selection or Mesh Edit Mode. Painting requires a supported material and a safe, readable texture/UV setup.
Use the operation
Paint color onto a mesh’s texture with direct brush strokes.
- Open Material Paint from the Material sidebar. If it shows a readiness message, resolve that condition before starting.
- Choose a color and set brush size, opacity, and hardness. Start with a short stroke on a small visible area.
- Inspect the painted region and nearby UV seams. Continue with several controlled strokes, then choose Stop when finished.
Controls and choices
| Controls | What changes |
|---|---|
| Brush controls | Size controls the painted area, opacity controls coverage, and hardness controls the softness of the stroke edge. |
| UVs and existing textures | Show3D can prepare a paint UV atlas for eligible untextured geometry. It blocks automatic UV rebuilding when that would remap existing textures. |
| Unavailable painting | Shared materials, unreadable texture images, unsupported mapping, or unsuitable UVs can prevent painting. Follow the displayed reason rather than replacing the existing texture blindly. |

Check the result
Check seams, repeated regions, and adjacent faces to confirm the stroke appears only where intended. Painting changes texture color; use sculpting when you need to change the surface shape.
