  4. Merge by distance

Merge by distance

Weld nearby vertices within a chosen tolerance. The example joins matching seam vertices without changing the outside boundary.

Before you start

Enter Edit Mode and select the region to clean. Estimate the smallest gap that must remain open before choosing a merge distance.

Use the operation

Weld nearby duplicate vertices without collapsing all selected vertices into one point.

  1. Press M and choose By Distance.
  2. Enter a small distance and inspect the live preview and removed-vertex count. The initial value is 0.0001.
  3. Increase the distance only enough to join the intended duplicates. Choose Merge or press Enter to commit; Cancel restores the original geometry.

Controls and choices

ControlsWhat changes
DistanceA nonnegative proximity threshold. A large value can erase narrow gaps or small details; work from the smallest useful value.
Selection scopeLimit the selection to the affected seam or region so unrelated nearby features are not included.
Preview countNo removed vertices means the current selection has no qualifying merge at that distance. It does not prove the whole model is clean.

Concept illustration. The diagrams explain the operation. Your result depends on the starting geometry and settings.

Check the result

Inspect the seam for remaining duplicates and verify that narrow openings and material boundaries still look right. Undo if the cleanup changes a feature you wanted to keep.
