Separate geometry
Move selected geometry into its own object. The two pieces keep their world-space positions and become independently addressable.
Before you start
Enter Edit Mode on a mesh. Decide whether to extract a selected region or split disconnected islands into objects.
Use the operation
Turn part of a mesh into an independently selectable object.
- For Selection, select the components to extract. For Loose Parts, inspect the mesh’s disconnected islands first.
- Press P or open Separate in the context menu, then choose Selection or Loose Parts.
- Return to Object Mode and identify the resulting objects in the scene. Rename them before moving or assigning materials.
Controls and choices
| Controls | What changes |
|---|---|
| Selection | Extracts the chosen region. The new object can still touch the original along the separation boundary. |
| Loose Parts | Splits disconnected mesh islands. It does not cut a connected surface into arbitrary pieces. |
| Join | Join can bring objects back into one mesh, but matching seam vertices still need Merge by Distance if a weld is required. |
See what changes
Before
One mesh, two islands
After
Two mesh objects
Check the result
Select and move the extracted object briefly to confirm its independence, then undo the check movement. Inspect the boundary before continuing.
Practice in Show3D
Open the editor and follow the steps with your own scene.
