Select a loop
Follow a connected edge pattern to select a useful region. Edge loops and rings are different selection patterns.
Before you start
Use Edge Select in mesh edit mode. A loop follows connected edge flow; a ring selects successive opposite edges across faces. Regular quad topology gives the most predictable path.
Use the operation
Select a continuous edge pattern without picking every edge individually.
- Hover over an edge that lies on the desired path.
- Alt-click the edge to select an edge loop. Add the platform's Ctrl/Cmd modifier with Alt to select an edge ring.
- Inspect the entire highlight, including the far side of the mesh, before moving or beveling it.
- If the path ends unexpectedly, inspect the local topology and adjust the selection manually or choose another seed edge.
Controls and choices
| Controls | What changes |
|---|---|
| Seed edge | Determines the pattern being followed. A different seed can select a different direction through the same area. |
| Loop / ring | A loop follows connected edges; a ring crosses neighboring faces through opposite edges. |
| Topology | Boundaries, triangles, branching vertices, or irregular faces can stop or change the path. |

Check the result
The selected pattern should match the intended edit boundary, not just the first visible segment. Selecting a loop adds no new edges; use Loop Cut to insert another row of topology. Codex can also select explicit loop, ring, boundary, or linked patterns after inspecting the scene.
