Connect vertices

Connect vertices across an existing face. The new edge divides that face without moving its vertices.

Before you start

Use Vertex Select in mesh edit mode. Choose suitable vertices across an existing face. Connect divides the existing surface; it is different from filling an open boundary or merging vertices into one.

Use the operation

Add an edge between existing face vertices.

  1. Select two non-adjacent vertices on a simple face for the first connection.
  2. Choose Connect Vertices from the vertex context menu, or press J with the viewport focused.
  3. Inspect the new edge and the faces on either side.
  4. Continue with another deliberate connection if the surface needs further division.

Chosen verticesMust provide a valid connection through the existing topology. Selecting unrelated vertices is not a request to bridge separate objects.
Existing edgesAlready connected or adjacent vertices may not create a useful new division.

Check the result

The vertex positions should stay in place while a new edge divides the face. If Connect is unavailable, simplify the selection and inspect whether the vertices share a suitable surface. Use Knife when the required endpoints do not yet exist.
