Extrude an edge
Extend an open boundary edge and create a connected face between the original and new edge.
Before you start
Use Edge Select in mesh edit mode and select an open boundary edge or a simple connected boundary chain. Extending a boundary creates faces between the old and new edge positions.
Use the operation
Grow an open surface from its boundary.
- Inspect the selected boundary and make sure it is the side of the surface you want to extend.
- Choose Extrude from the edge context menu and move the new boundary.
- Confirm a modest extension and inspect the new strip of faces.
- Continue shaping the new boundary with component transforms if the strip needs to taper or turn.
Controls and choices
| Controls | What changes |
|---|---|
| Boundary chain | Defines the length of the new face strip. Disconnected selected edges create separate strips. |
| Direction and distance | Control the extension from the existing boundary. Avoid moving the strip through the original surface. |
See what changes
Before
A boundary edge
After
An extended strip
Check the result
Inspect face orientation and connections at the ends. Extruding an interior edge can add unwanted overlapping or branching surface geometry. If a closed volume is required, inspect and close the remaining open boundaries separately.
